My path has taken me through some varied and interesting places. Early in my career it was cable television where I learned about signal flow and troubleshooting, under very challenging conditions. From there I went into the world of sound reinforcement, live sound, which exposed me to the craft of audio. From top notch professionals in the field, on state of the art equipment, I learned the art of mixing sound.
The road then led me to the world of radio, where I spent some time as an audio engineer at the top rated station in Los Angeles. I learned the skill of timing and how to work under extremely tight deadlines. It was my first experience in the broadcast world. I was working with some of the top names in radio, true legends. My first brush with "talent" and celebrities. The radio days were great days indeed.
From there I spent time in the freelance world. Mixing sound for live music, television, and remote recording. I did a stint wiring and installing new studio facilities. I also worked as a control room technician of a major satellite teleport facility.
In 1985 I started working at NBC4 in Los Angeles. This was the begining of almost twenty years of working in the field of television news. Aside from the practical (technical and editorial) lessons learned, the education that I received on the street, with the people, covering news, was priceless.
I considered it to be a front row seat to life, an amazing lesson in perspective. The sights and sounds are ingrained in me and storytelling is in my blood.
I had the privilage and honor to work alongside some of the best reporters, photographers, and editors in the news business. I am forever grateful and humbled by my good fortune of having shared some memorable times at NBC.
